Four new charter schools approved in Metro Nashville

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Metropolitan Nashville Public School System will have four new charter schools beginning with the 2014-2015 school year.

The Board of Education followed the recommendation of the charter review committee, giving approval to the charter schools, two of which will service primarily under served areas of Nashville.

However, during Monday night's meeting, school board member Amy Frogge spoke out about approving so many charter schools in the system. When the new charter schools open in 2014, there will be 22 charters schools.

Frogge was concerned about the financial impact so many charter schools will have on traditional schools.

"While I believe that good charter schools can compliment our district. We need to be able to focus on broader needs of all the 81,000 students in our district. If we are to continue to approve charter schools, I think we need to make radical changes financially," said Frogge

School Board President Cheryl Mayes supports Frogge.

"We cannot put 95 percent of our students financially at risk for 5 percent. It's very important for us to think about that as we move forward," said Mayes.

Four years ago, there were only five charter school in Nashville. By 2014, there will be 22.
