Goodlettsville police to open substation at Rivergate Mall

GOODLETTSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Shoplifting costs businesses thousands of dollars each year and ties up police resources.

This week Goodlettsville police will begin beefing up its presence at Rivergate Mall to combat the problem.

In addition to sales signs and foot traffic, shoppers at the popular mall will soon see a lot more cops on the beat.

The Goodlettsville Police Department is opening a substation inside the mall between Macy's and Radio Shack.

Every evening officers will line up for roll call before fanning out across the city.

"It's just for them to have a presence, to be seen, and for the community to be able to see them," said Goodlettsville Police Chief Gary Goodwin.

Goodwin came up with the idea after talking with community leaders and crunching the numbers.

"Our number one crime overall as a city is shoplifting," Goodwin said.

So far this year Goodlettsville officers have responded to 153 shoplifting calls, 138 of which were at Rivergate Mall.

"We'll have a greater vehicle presence outside and we're hopeful that it will discourage criminal activity, so it's a benefit for us," Goodwin said.

"It's going to be a win-win for all involved," said Jennifer Cardwell, spokeswoman for CBL Properties, which manages the mall.

Mall managers said the substation will be an added layer of security for shoppers and retailers.

"It is a good thing," Cardwell said. "We will have the benefit of having additional police officers here in the presence of a substation here in the Rivergate Mall."

"We've had very little crime reported in the mall property area, but we want to make sure it stays that way," Goodwin said.

The community is invited to attend the official ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday at 11:30 a.m.
