LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Nearly 300 people ran the streets of Laurel this morning to help support a Christian homeless shelter. 284 folks, to be exact, participated in the inaugural Mission at the Cross 5K Race and 2 Mile Walk.

The Mission at the Cross gives homeless men a chance to get back on their feet by providing them a place to live for awhile.

It was founded in 2008.

Organizers raised $27,000 during the event, far surpassing their goal of $20,000.

"I'm so excited," said Dee Dee Lowery, race director. "(For the) first race, you never know what to expect and I thought maybe 150 (participants) would be great and we got 284, so it's awesome," she said.

More than 500 men have been helped at the shelter in the last 4 1/2 years.

20-year-old Anthony Stricker of Hattiesburg took first place in the 5K, with a time of 17 minutes, 11-seconds.
