"Kittypalooza" big early success at Southern Pines

Posted: Updated:

Folks were lined up Friday when they opened the gate at the Southern Pines Animal Shelter to kick off the "Kittypalooza" adoption event.

Thanks to a grant from the ASPCA, the shelter is waiving the adoption fee on 44 cats and kittens, 22 on Friday and another 22 on Saturday. By midday the shelter had already adopted out more than a dozen kittens and cats.

The shelter has seen a huge influx of kittens this spring and are holding the event to help eliminate overcrowding in the cat and kitten cottages.

"The last time we did a free kitten and cat adoption event like this we did a significant number of dog adoptions," said Theresa Venette, Shelter Manager. "It gets people out to the shelter seeing what it is we do. Even if you are not out to adopt a cat or a dog, there is still a lot to see at the shelter and it's a fun place to visit."

All the cats and kittens that are adopted have already had their spay or neuter surgery, have had their age appropriate shots, and have been checked for worms. Owners also receive a free month of pet health insurance.

Saturday they open the gates once again at 10 a.m. for day two of the event. Twenty-two more kittens will be made available and Bops will have free ice cream for all visitors in the afternoon.
