HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

By this fall, people should be living and working again in two iconic, century-old, downtown Hattiesburg buildings that are undergoing multi-million dollar restorations. Residents are expected to begin moving into the America Building on Front Street in just a few weeks.

And later this summer, more tenants should be doing the same at the Carter Building on Main and Front Street.

Both are part of the Hub City Lofts development which began a year ago.

They'll feature dozens of apartments and some retail shops.

"We're almost ready for people to move in the America Building...that should happen within the next few weeks," said Betsy Rowell, executive director of the Historic Hattiesburg Downtown Association. "The Carter Building will come on line a few weeks after that. We have a total of 55 new apartments coming on line between these two buildings and then retail space on the street level," she said.

On Thursday, June 20, developers will present a detailed update of the projects at a monthly meeting of the Historic Hattiesburg Downtown Association.
