Hand Bell Festival comes to Hattiesburg

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Hand bell choirs from all over the southeast are in Hattiesburg to take part in the Magnolia Ring Hand Bell Festival.

The three day festival is being put  on by region six of the Hand Bell Ringers of America. More than 200 hand bell ringers are participating in the festival at the First Presbyterian Church on Hwy. 98 in Hattiesburg.

During the festival the group will rehearse en masse and in smaller groups. The festival will culminate with a concert featuring the 200 hand bell ringers and 1000 hand bells.

They are being led by renowned composer of hand bell and choral music Fred Gramann from the American Church in Paris, France.

"He's an American who moved to Paris 35-years-ago to study organ and hand bell and got into church work there," said Larry Smith, board member. "He conducts all over the world. He's a very fine gentlemen and very fine musician."

The festivals final concert is Saturday at 2 p.m. at the church. It's free and open to the public.
