Jeff Hammond's contract as athletic director at Southern Miss expires June 30, 2013. Wednesday, USM President Rodney Bennett announced Hammond's contract will not be renewed following its expiration at the end of June.
General Jeff Hammond was hired as the athletic director at Southern Miss June 6, 2012, after serving as the interim athletic director following Richard Giannini's retirement in December 2011. Hammond, a U.S. Army veteran and major general, graduated from Southern Miss in 1978 after playing quarterback and serving as captain of the USM football team for three years.
Deputy athletic director Jeremy McClain has been named the interim athletic director while President Bennett and a search committee complete a nationwide search for the next leader of Golden Eagle athletics.
