CHANDLER, AZ (CBS5) -

Chandler firefighters an elderly couple was found dead inside their home after a fire early Wednesday morning.

An 83-year-old woman was found near the bathroom and a 72-year-old man in the bedroom of the house near Warner and Alma School roads after the fire was reported shortly after midnight, Chandler Police Sgt. Joe Favazzo said.

He said no cause had been determined, but there were reports the woman was on oxygen and that both she and the man were smokers.

He said arson investigators from the police and fire departments were investigating the cause, though there was no immediate evidence it was set. He said investigators were looking into whether there were working smoke detectors in the home.

Favazzo said two greyhounds also died in the fire.

Favazzo said the relationship between the man and woman had not been determined.

No other information was immediately available.
