Arizona teen helps veterans with patriotic song

GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

A Valley teen who aspires to be a country music singer-songwriter believes her job as an artist is to help people through her music.

And she's off to a great start. Ashley Wineland, 15, has written a patriotic song called Red, White and Blue.

"Patriotism is something that's really important to my family and I. And so I wanted to write a song that paid tribute to the veterans and our active service men and women," said Wineland.

With the help of local musician and music producer Bryan Kuban, Wineland recorded the song which is now available on iTunes. Kuban also helped her produce a music video, which has gotten more than 36,000 hits on YouTube.

"As people started watching, I knew it was going to be something big. And I wanted to give everything that I could in any way possible, so I knew that donating 100 percent of the proceeds was just something I had to do," said Wineland.

All the proceeds will go to charities that support veterans and service families. The first installment has already been donated to the Arizona Veteran's hospital.  Wineland has already received a letter of thanks for her generosity.

"They said 'Thank you. All the donations were given out to families who really needed them. The veterans really appreciated it.' And just getting that letter made me so happy. To know that I helped somebody through my music. Really as an artist that's all I really want to do," said the soon-to-be high school sophomore.

Wineland has written and recorded three other songs in the past year. One is an anti-bullying song.

"My dream is to be a performer. And whether I make it big or not, it doesn't really matter to me. As long as I'm out there writing and singing and entertaining people, just doing what I love, I'm happy," said Wineland.

Wineland attends Deer Valley High School in Glendale. She plays the trumpet in the school band. As busy as she is with her writing and recording, Wineland said school comes first.
