Budget cuts take toll on Camp Shelby

FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Government ordered budget cuts are taking their toll on Camp Shelby south of Hattiesburg.

Since 9/11, military installations all across the country now have heightened security. However, Defense Department ordered budget cuts have led to empty guard houses at the entrances of the nation's largest national guard training site.

Statewide, 1,400 National Guard employees have been forced to take furloughs this summer because of sequestration. This amounts to about a 20 percent pay cut. At Camp Shelby, the furloughs affect 290 full time employees who will take off Mondays beginning July 8.

In Camp Shelby's case, the budget cuts run deeper. In addition to furloughs, officials at Shelby say 17 state employees who were gate guards have either been laid off or assigned to other positions on base. Shelby's public affairs office says military police are still roaming the area to maintain security but admits its limited security.

Since 2006, more than 200,000 soldiers have used Shelby as the mobilization site for the war on terror.
