Bypass road to blockaded Grand Canyon Skywalk set to be completed today

GRAND CANYON WEST, AZ (CBS5) -

An attempt by Mohave County ranch owners to block the route to the Grand Canyon Skywalk with a toll booth will be bypassed by the Hualapai Tribe when an alternate route to the popular tourist destination is finalized Tuesday.

The toll booth was constructed in late May along the main path leading visitors to Grand Canyon West and the Skywalk. An armed guard blocked the road and was collecting $20 per person and $500 per tour bus to proceed.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management issued a permit to the Hualapai Tribe to complete work on the bypass route which is expected to be completed by midday Tuesday.

Hualapai Tribe spokesman Dave Cieslak praised the completion of the new bypass saying, "Tourists visiting the Grand Canyon can now use this easy bypass and enjoy their vacations without fear of a shakedown by an armed vigilante."
