Will resources be available if large wildfire breaks out?

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Thankfully, it's been a quiet start to the Arizona wildfire season.

Fire officials said they're surprised but pleased we haven't had any major fires yet.

"Typically in the Southwest, New Mexico starts with the fires first, then we expect that as things get hotter and drier, we'll see increased activity, which is what is happening right now," said Clay Templin with Tonto National Forest.

Although Arizona may not have all their own resources, it's standard procedure for crews from other states to lend a hand.

And when things do get active, plenty of resources will be available. And many of those resources are stationed at the Phoenix Interagency Fire Center at Gateway Airport.

Whether it's the DC-10 fire tanker or fire crews from various agencies in Arizona and other states, they're all ready to go.

"If we need additional resources, we'll bring them in from other parts of the U.S. that are not quite as active as we are," said Templin.

"Conditions down here are getting bad enough that they need us to come down from Idaho to possibly fight fires here in Arizona.  There'll be the same kind of thing if conditions get bad in Idaho, where firefighters from Arizona would come up there," said Joel Eastes, a firefighter from the Payette National Forest in Idaho.
