HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The St. Louis Cardinals selected Southern Miss right-handed pitcher Andrew Pierce (Stringer, Miss.) in the eighth-round (245th player chosen overall) of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Friday afternoon.

Pierce, who played two seasons for the Golden Eagles, earned first-team All-Conference USA honors in both of his years on the strength of a 16-6 career record and a 2.30 earned run average. He posted 191 career strikeouts in 207 innings with just 36 walks for a 5.31 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

The 2012 C-USA Newcomer of the Year also earned preseason All-America honors by Collegiate Baseball earlier this spring.

Pierce fanned at least five batters in 18 of his 29 career starts (31 appearances overall) and the Golden Eagles went 16-2 when he accomplished that feat.

Pierce is the highest Golden Eagle draftee since B.A. Vollmuth was taken by the Oakland Athletics in the third round of 2011 first-year player draft. The pitcher is also the first Southern Miss player taken by the Cardinals since Todd McInnis got picked in the 25th round of the 2011 draft.
