HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Congressman Steven Palazzo was in Hattiesburg Friday morning, touting a new constitutional amendment he's proposed that would prevent the government from taxing people who don't buy health insurance. Palazzo was keynote speaker for the Area Development Partnership's First Friday event at Southern Oaks and Gardens.

His "Right to Refuse" amendment was proposed several months ago in the House and this week, it was introduced into the Senate by Florida Senator Marco Rubio.

Palazzo's proposal would prevent Congress from taxing individuals and businesses as punishment for failing to purchase goods and services.

"I just don't think Congress should be in the business of telling the American people how to spend their hard-earned money, or be penalized or taxed (for not purchasing health insurance)," Palazzo said. "Because after all, who's going to be enforcing this, the Internal Revenue Service and we've seen lately we should not even be trusting them in this instance," he said.

Palazzo also spoke about other issues regarding Obamacare, tax policy and the effects of the ongoing sequestration.
