Majority of Americans now support gay marriage

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

According to the latest polling research by Pew, the majority of Americans now support gay marriage, and the vast majority see it as inevitable.

In a report released on Thursday, the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press recorded that 73 percent of Americans say that the "legal recognition of same-sex marriage is 'inevitable,'" and 51 percent of Americans favor the legality of gay marriage.

The poll was conducted May 1 trough May 5, and found that most opposition was religious in nature.

The research went on to say that nine out of 10 Americans now say they personally know someone who is gay or lesbian and half know someone who is homosexual in their own families. The research showed that the more people a person knows personally who is gay or lesbian, the more likely that person is to support the legality of gay marriage.

In addition, Pew found that 45 percent of Americans say homosexuality is a sin, and 35 percent are vehemently opposed to gay marriage.

Pew reported that 78 percent of "white evangelical Protestants" are opposed to gay marriage, but that 70 percent believe it is still inevitable.
