Lamar County gets large grant for Optimist Park improvements

LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

The Mississippi Department of Transportation awarded $300,000 in Transportation Alternative funding to the Lamar County Board of Supervisors Monday to assist with improvements at Optimist Park in Oak Grove.

The money will be used to build a new pedestrian pathway, pavilion, and picnic area. The pathway and picnic area will be located next to the existing sports facilities and ball fields.

The Transportation Alternative funding will cover 80-percent of the cost of the project with the other remainder coming from the county.

Southern Transportation Commissioner Tom King said the check marks the official launch of the project development.

"In presenting this funding to Lamar County we celebrate the start of this important project with many quality of life features for the citizens of the area," said King.

With funding in place, MDOT will now work with Lamar County to establish construction schedules.
