MTSU-Chinese institute cooperate in use of herbs

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) - A partnership between Middle Tennessee State University and the Guangxi Botanical Garden of Medicinal Plants in China continues to flourish.

A delegation from the university in Murfreesboro concluded a final weekend in Nanning, China, on Sunday with a report showing modern uses of ancient herbal remedies show promise in treating a variety of ailments.

MTSU President Sidney McPhee and Miao Jianhua, vice president of the Guangxi Academic Science Institute, christened an MTSU-branded joint research center at the garden's new research laboratory and headquarters.

The garden contains more than 7,400 medicinal plants.

Under terms of the partnership, garden researchers cultivate and prepare extracts. MTSU scientists, led by Professor Elliot Altman, then screen the samples to determine their promise in the treatment of ailments.
