EAST TEXAS (KLTV) -

Today marks the official start of the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season, but that is not the talk around East Texas. A cold front is making its way through East Texas, and with it a round of showers and thunderstorms is expected.

The past few days, a powerful and deadly storm system has been pounding through the plain states, developing numerous tornadoes, damaging many homes and businesses, and even taking the lives of many people. This same storm system is going to be moving through East Texas Saturday, and with it comes the threat for severe weather. The good news is that the threat is not anywhere close to where it was in states to our north.

The atmosphere is not set up for the same kind of severe weather that we saw in Oklahoma, Missouri and Illinois. The low-level shear will not be strong enough to support a strong or widespread tornado threat, but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. The atmosphere however is set up for strong straight-line wind damage, and large hail in some areas. The storm prediction center has issued a slight risk for severe weather over much of East Texas today.

We've been mainly seeing a partly cloudy sky, but in the evening/overnight hours, a line of showers and thunderstorms is expected to push through East Texas. Starting in our northwestern counties, and ending in our southeastern counties. Some of these showers and thunderstorms could be severe with the biggest threat being strong damaging winds and hail. An isolated tornado or two cannot be ruled out though.

We will as always keep you up to date on all of the weather moving through East Texas. Remember to download the KLTV 7 weather app, and that you can track the severe weather from your desktop computer.
