HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Now that hurricane season is here, the American Red Cross is recommending that residents in the Pine Belt do several things: prepare a disaster survival kit, make a plan and be informed.

They say the kit should include a portable radio and flashlight, along with enough water and non-perishable food for three days.

They say you should also stock up on prescription medications and make sure you include any vital documents and insurance information.

"The big thing is that you have a kit that is ready to go, in a designated place, that you have those things always there," said Chase Munro, Hattiesburg Branch Coordinator for the American Red Cross.

The American Red Cross also has a hurricane app for your cell phone which has more information about what to do before and after a storm.
