HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Some Hattiesburg-area VFW and American Legion members paid special tribute to our nation's veterans Saturday, with help from some young volunteers. They placed American flags on the graves of thousands of veterans across the Pine Belt.

They got volunteer help from groups such as the Youth Challenge Program at Camp Shelby, the Hattiesburg High School JR ROTC and Den 88 of the Cub Scouts from south Forrest County.

"It's good to have these young kids out here helping us, because that way, they understand what's going on," said Marion Walley, an Army veteran and member of Post 24 of the American Legion in Hattiesburg. "To get to watch them put out a flag and after they post the flag, they turn back and salute, is great," he said.

"I felt good coming out here today and laying flags out on the stones and showing respect to the Army," said Derry Lewis, a Youth Challenge cadet from Jackson.

"I was ready to give tribute because I feel as if no hero should go unrecognized," said Kaylyn Lewis, a member of the JR ROTC at Hattiesburg High School.

More than 5,000 flags were placed on gravesites throughout South Mississippi.
