HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The Hattiesburg Sunrise Rotary Club presented a check for $5000 Wednesday to the Pine Burr Area Council Boy Scouts.

The club raised more than $10,000 in their annual Charitable Funds Awards 5-K run. More than 100 runners participated in the run and the event has around 20 sponsors.

The money will be used to support the Boy Scouts Scout reach program. Scout reach is a program designed to give all young people the opportunity to be a scout regardless of circumstances, neighborhood, or ethnic background.

"We feel the service to our community, service to our fellow man, is the primary job that everyone has in the world, in our country, and in our community," said Tom Heanu, Rotary Club spokesperson.

The remaining money from the run will be used to support local charities and to purchase dictionaries for some area elementary school students.
