Columbia Police looking for car chase suspect

Columbia police are looking for a man who waved a gun around in a convenience store parking lot and led officers on a high-speed chase.

Sunday afternoon officers received a call that a black male was brandishing a gun in the Amoco parking lot on Lafayette Avenue. When police arrived on scene the four suspects piled into the vehicle and almost hit a patrol car on their way out. After blowing through several intersections, the driver tossed out the gun and was blocked into a dead end street.

Detective Mike Cooper of the Columbia Police Department says, "The vehicle ran through several intersections at a high rate of speed and just before it came to a stop the driver had thrown the weapon out of the window near where there was several children playing. We're looking for Dewitt Charles Echols. He is approximately 5'7'', 140 lbs. He lives in the Columbia area and is known to frequent the Hattiesburg area."

Three of the four suspects were caught. However Echols, the black male driving the vehicle fled on foot, and is wanted for possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a controlled substance, and a host of other charges.
