HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The South Mississippi Chapter of the American Red Cross hosted an inaugural fund-raising event Friday night which honored several Hattiesburg-area military retirees. The first Stars and Stripes: Salute to the Military at Southern Miss' Thad Cochran Center was held in conjunction with U.S. Armed Services Week.

Honorees included Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Steve Parham, Specialist Fifth Class (Ret.) Ted Tibbett and Private First Class (Ret.) Clarence Magee.

Proceeds from ticket sales and a silent auction will fund American Red Cross programs to help storm and fire victims.

"As you know, we've been very busy in the Hattiesburg area over the past year," said Jay Huffstatler, chapter executive. "We've had Hurricane Isaac, we've had the Christmas Day storms in South Hattiesburg and of course, the tornado that struck the area February 10th and damaged our building. So, we're still here in Hattiesburg, we're still providing the resources to the clients that have been affected everyday," he said.

Keynote speaker for the event was Southern Miss athletic director Jeff Hammond.
