CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) -

Dozens of former members of the Mississippi National Guard gathered at Camp Shelby Thursday to renew old friendships and check out the latest military equipment.

It was part of the annual Retiree Day.

They were welcomed by Maj. Gen. Augustus L. Collins, Mississippi's adjutant general. They were also treated to lunch and invited to view some of the Army's newest tanks and unmanned aerial systems.

"It's our opportunity in the Mississippi National Guard and at Camp Shelby to say thank you to all the men and women who served our country and our state for over the years," said Collins.

"These are our mentors," said Col. Brad Smith, Camp Shelby commander. "They're the reason we are where we are and they're the reason that this place is as it is today," he said.

"There aren't too many things in life that are such an honor as having been in the military for 20 years and being a retiree and representing my country," said Cliff Mize, a retiree from Booneville.

"This was my first time to come back and attend the event, but it's good to see a lot of the employees that are coming and supporting and seeing the changes in the Guard and how we are progressing," said Clifford Butler, another retiree from Monticello.

Since 2004, Camp Shelby has mobilized and demobilized more than 200,000 troops for overseas deployments.
