HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The four Hattiesburg police officers who've been killed in the line of duty were remembered at an annual memorial service Wednesday morning.

A wreath was laid during a Peace Officers' Memorial Day ceremony at the Hattiesburg Police Department to honor Officer Jesse James Everette, Officer M.W. Vinson, Jr., Sergeant David Anthony and Sergeant Jackie Dole Sherrill.

The ceremony also included a 21-gun salute and the playing of Taps.

"We just always so appreciate everything that everybody does to remember us," said Nell Anthony Cooley, the widow of slain Hattiesburg Police Sergeant David Anthony.  He was shot and killed May 23, 1973 after responding to an armed robbery at a bank.

"Daddy did believe in serving and doing what was right by people," said James Everett, son of Officer Jesse James Everette, who, along with Officer M. W. Vinson, Jr., was shot and killed while investigating a burglary on March 9, 1952. "To see the city continue to remember him and Jackie (Dole Sherrill) and Mr. Anthony and Mr. Vinson, it just means the whole world to us," Everett said.

May 12-19 is also National Police Week.
