Inaccuracies found in Columbia Municipal Court Audit

A city audit for fiscal year 2012 reveals several book keeping discrepancies within the Columbia Municipal Court.

Mayor Reed Houston says the irregularities aren't a new problem. The problems stem from old court files and fines dating back to as far as the 90's. Houston says the board authorized around $70,000 to hire a firm to scan and organize old files. The proper book keeping techniques are in place, however the city has trouble holding on to Municipal Court Clerks due to a less than competitive wage.

Houston says, "We are going to have to start off at a decent wage and I guess our problem is what's decent you know. So, that's what the board's going to have to figure out and to hire somebody with the pay enough and potential to earn more to stay. Then I think we need to hire a third person back there to work on these old files, to do a lot of the research to clean some of them up."

Mayor Houston says the board has discussed the issue. Hiring a third person to focus on organizing older cases and fines would enable the future municipal court clerk to audit books more efficiently.
