New elementary school nearing completion

School may be winding down for the summer, but teachers will be hard at work prepping a new school for the fall.

Lamar County School District will be unveiling a brand new elementary school for the upcoming 2013 – 2014 school year. Longleaf Elementary School is located along W 4th Street near Jackson Road.

Nearly 725 students will attend the new school, consisting of Oak Grove students who live north of Highway 98.

Construction on the school is nearing completion and work has begun this week to move in equipment and office furniture. The school was originally scheduled to open this spring but was delayed due to poor weather and construction along West 4th Street.

Longleaf Elementary School is expected to alleviate overcrowding issues at the current Oak Grove elementary schools.

"We also think it will alleviate some traffic congestion sending students closer to where they live to school. It is going to safe us some on fuel and transportation costs, in transporting students closer to where they live," explained Dr. Ben Burnett, Superintendent of the Lamar County School District.

"It is going to be some good changes all the way around."
