First date from online dating site leads to armed robbery

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Police say criminals are turning to a popular dating website to find potential victims, and a recent case even led to an armed robbery.

Plenty of Fish touts itself as the "leading free online dating site," but police are warning the Middle Tennessee dating pool to proceed with caution.

Many single people these days are turning to online dating sites to meet a partner, but investigators say Calvin Hunt wasn't looking for a date.

Hunt met two men at the Red Roof Inn in Nashville and then allegedly pulled out a gun, fired it and robbed them.

"I guess the moral to the story is you never know who you are meeting. You may be meeting someone who may be lonely or are looking for a friend, but there are some people who just prey on people," said Metro police Lt. John Drake.

In fact, police say they have had seven complaints of criminal acts in the past seven weeks involving a variety of online dating companies.

"You think you met the person you are highly interested in and they turn out to rob you or commit a crime, it would be very disappointing or heartbreaking even. So it's important to take the time to get to know people," Drake said.

    There were two Rite Aid stores in the Pine Belt at the start of 2018; one in Petal and one in Hattiesburg. Now, only the Petal location remains open, but it will soon close its doors for good, too.
