ANKARA, TURKEY (WDAM) -

A Purvis man who picked up stones during a vacation in Turkey receives a one-year suspended sentence for attempting to smuggle historical artifacts.

Jason Dement was briefly detained in April at an airport near the Mediterranean coast -- because, authorities say, two pieces inside his bag of collected stones appeared to be artifacts. Experts later noted the stones were from the Roman era.

A lawyer says a court convicted Dement, 30, of attempted smuggling and gave him the suspended sentence. The lawyer says Dement  would serve it only if he reoffends in Turkey within five years.
