DREAM of Hattiesburg gets help in rebuilding library

Dream of Hattiesburg is getting help in rebuilding their library that was lost when their resource center on Hutchinson Ave. was destroyed during the Feb. 10, tornado.

Not only did the organization lose their resource center, but also everything in it including their 1500 book library.

A local neighborhood volunteer group lead by Ward 4 Councilman Dave Ware, State Representative Toby Barker, and community leader Chris Price is donating 300 books to DREAM so they can continue to offer their tutoring programs in reading.

DREAM is temporarily operating all their programs out of the Jaycee Building on Hutchinson Ave. until a new permanent location can be found. They were able to begin limited operations a week after the tornado, but still need quite a few items to get back to where they were.

"We have been looking for school supplies, text books, books, backpacks, and things to put in the backpacks," said Linda Vasquez, Exec. Dir. Dream of Hattiesburg. We're also in the process of having our 30th gala on Aug. 29, and we're going to build a dream to have fun so we can purchase another building. Any gift cards or if anyone wants to be a part of the gala event to donate that way."

Donations to DREAM can be dropped off at the Jaycee building on Hardy St.

The East 49 Volunteer Effort was instrumental in the days following the tornado in helping residents begin the process of cleaning up and beginning the rebuilding process. During that time more than 1100 volunteers gave of their time and over 300 homes were worked on.
