Couple faces charges after Covington, Lamar high-speed chase

Posted: Updated:

An Alabama couple will be in court in Covington County late Tuesday on a variety of charges related to a high-speed chase Monday night, including four counts of felony assault on police officers.

Authorities arrested Jamie May, 32, of Bessemer, Al. and Margaret Bates, 29, of Hueytown, Al. in a wooded area near the Covington-Lamar county line after the two allegedly lead authorities on a high-speed chase.

Authorities say the chase began in Seminary when a resident reported a suspicious vehicle in the area. Units from Covington and Lamar Counties, as well as the Mississippi Highway Patrol and Sumrall Police Department forced the car onto a dead-end road.

Authorities fired at the vehicle in an effort to disable it when the couple tried to back over officers. The couple then fled into the woods but were caught a short time later. No one was injured in the shooting.

May and Bates are charged with receiving stolen property since the car they were driving was stolen in Alabama. They also face felony fleeing, assault on officers, possession of cocaine, and possession of burglary tools. May is also a wanted felon in Alabama.
