PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

An annual event in Petal to raise money for cancer research had to be re-scheduled because of Friday night's heavy rainfall. An abbreviated Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society began at Hinton-Relay Park at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon.

30 teams of walkers were hoping to raise about $125,000, while enjoying food, live music and other activities.

The Relay for Life was set to begin Friday night, but was postponed until the rain ended.

"It gives the community an opportunity to donate, to buy raffle checks, things like that, to raise money for research," said Michael Thornton, co-chair of the Relay for Life and a cancer survivor.

"My father-in-law passed away with Leukemia and my mother-in-law passed away with ovarian cancer and so, it's very, very personal," said Kerri Mauldin, community representative for the American Cancer Society. "And that's what motivates us to find a cure, so our children and our grandchildren won't have to hear those words again," she said.

The Relay for Life was scheduled to conclude Saturday at 10 p.m. with a luminary service.
