No charge against student in shooting accident

Posted: Updated:

Officials at the University of Southern Mississippi say a student is recovering at a Hattiesburg hospital from an accidental gunshot wound in the leg.

University spokesman Van Arnold says the student is in the intensive care unit at Forrest General Hospital. The student was in critical but stable condition.

Arnold says the student will not be charged with a crime. State law exempts students over the age of 21 with enhanced concealed carry licenses from the ban on students possessing weapons on campuses.

Arnold says questions about possessing a firearm on campus will be dealt with later.

The man was found bleeding outside his vehicle parked near the front of campus Thursday.
