"Art for Heart" raises money to fight heart disease

Organizers of the American Heart Association's Art for Heart event hoped to raise $200,000. Organizers of the American Heart Association's Art for Heart event hoped to raise $200,000.
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Dozens of Hattiesburg-area art lovers gathered at the Train Depot Friday night to help fight heart disease by attending an annual fund raising event.

The Art for Heart gala included both live and silent auction items.

All proceeds went to the American Heart Association.

Organizers hoped to raise about $200,000.

The American Heart Association also honored retired Hattiesburg businessman Brad Bryan and the late Doc and Carolyn Roberts for their support.

    Eight schools in the Forrest County Public School District have been given the go-ahead to accept bids to build safe rooms on school campuses around the county. The rooms are designed to withstand high winds in the event of a tornado and can protect all of the students and staff at any of the schools to prevent loss of life due to a severe weather event.
