Advocacy groups educate officials on crime victims' rights

Law enforcement groups around the Pine Belt attended the law enforcement training forum at South Central Place in Laurel on Friday.

Victims' Rights Advocates educated officers on how to assess dangerous situations involving violent crime by presenting a series of slideshows and forums.

The Mississippi Coalition Against Sexual Assault aims to educate the public about assault crimes involving technology.

"Just be mindful of what you're sharing," Jamie Dean of the Mississippi Coalition Against Sexual Assault said.

"Don't share your personal information, and be mindful about what other organizations are sharing about you."

Lt. Tony Stiles retold his story about what happened to him last summer as he responded to a domestic violence call in Jones County. He is still recovering from injuries after being shot five times.

Stiles got a standing ovation during the event for his service.

"It's gonna take some time, but I'm coming along well and I think all the prayers coming from the people in Jones County and surrounding areas has got a lot to do with it," Stiles said.

Stiles is still undergoing surgeries to treat his massive injuries.
