JASPER COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

For the second year in a row a Stringer Attendance Center student is recognized for their volunteer efforts with the Prudential Spirit of Community Award as the student volunteer of the year in the state.

Freshman Emilee Parker was given the award during a ceremony at the school Tuesday afternoon.

Following her cousins death from cancer in 2009 the family created a foundation to help out other families dealing with cancer. Emilee joined the cause, forming a kids club at the school to help out children with cancer.

As part of their efforts they have reached out to children with cancer at Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson.

"We've put together packages for people who have to stay unexpectedly at the hospital and we provide things like soft tissues, candy and books for the children," said Parker.

Parker received a medallion recognizing her work from Prudential. She will travel to the Washington D.C. this week where she will be awarded $1000 and have the opportunity to be considered for one of 10 national awards.
