Freedom Riders visit the Forrest County Courthouse

Posted: Updated:

The Freedom Riders Civil Rights Group gathered on the front steps of the Forrest County Courthouse Monday as part of their pilgrimage to keep part of the Voting Rights Act alive.

The pilgrimage is billed as, a Journey with the Foot Soldiers of the Civil Rights Movement. The riders travel to areas of Mississippi and Alabama to give Tribute to the martyrs of the civil rights movement including Medgar Evers, Viola Liuzzo, and civil rights workers Goodman, Chaney, and Schwerner. A primary goal of the tour is to draw awareness to Section 5 of the Voter Rights Act.

Freedom Rider and Mayor of Tuskegee, Alabama, Johnny Ford says, "To send a message to the Supreme Court that we want Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act kept alive. We want it kept in the voting rights act because it is the pre-clearance section. We need to send a message to the President, to the Congress, and to the Supreme Court that we will not be silent when they are trying to take away voting rights."

Tomorrow the Freedom Riders will head to Jackson to launch their Voting Rights Never Forget, Never Again Pilgrimage.
