NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Fiona Murphey, 13, from Nashville wanted to do something to improve the environment, so she wrote her congressman.

The student at West End Middle School wrote a five-page letter to U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper to support a renewable energy bill as part of an English assignment and didn't actually expect a reply.

But the Nashville Democrat instead showed up at her school to surprise her in front of all of her classmates.

He presented Murphey with a certificate and announced he would co-sponsor bill that would allow the federal government to lease public land for wind and solar development.

Fiona was born with osteogenesis imperfecta, often called brittle bone disease, and uses a wheelchair, but she has not allowed her health challenges to suppress her goals.
