The Forrest County Supervisors accepted a proposal Friday to buy the old county jail in downtown Hattiesburg.
CDC Development Inc. bid $325,000 to buy the jail, parking lots, and the Sakler Building, which housed the old women's jail. The bid is for half the appraised value of the property and about $90,000 higher than the offers from two previous bidders.
The deal is contingent on the developer making acceptable arrangements for parking for the county school employees who work in the adjacent Carpenter Building.
Board President David Hogan says they have not received specifics on what the developers plans are for the property are, but are confident it will be good for downtown.
"Through our talks with them they do intend to remodel the facility and possibly have rental for retail and businesses as well as housing," said Hogan. "It could be apartments or condos."
Hogan says the board has been told the developers intend to invest six to 10-million to renovate the property.
CDC Development is made up of local businessmen Lee Sims, Charlie Sutherland, Charlie Finnigan,Carl Nicholson.
