Bicycle helmet fit test

Riding a bike can turn deadly in an instant, and a growing number of states are now passing bicycle helmet laws to help keep our kids safe.

Many parents have a tough time getting kids to put on a helmet, so if it's fitting properly or not is something that may be overlooked.

Kate Carr, president of Safe Kids Worldwide, shares three tips on how you can make sure their helmet fits just right.

First of all, you want to make sure that there is about two fingers' width above the eyes. If they can see the edge of the helmet when looking up, that's perfect.

When it comes to the fit of the straps around the ears, you want to see a "V" over the ears.

Finally, make sure the chin strap is on just right. They should be able to open their mouth wide, but make sure it isn't too loose or too tight.

One more tip: Buying a used bicycle helmet may save you some money, but it could also be dangerous! The helmet may be damaged from a previous incident and may not meet current safety standards. It could even carry head lice, so a helmet is one of those items you should always buy brand new.
