HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Some Southern Miss students shared their ideas for marketing the Hub City's two microbreweries during a monthly meeting Thursday of the Historic Hattiesburg Downtown Association.

Several students in the Department of Casino, Hospitality and Tourism Management made presentations to help market the products of Gordon Creek Brewery and Southern Prohibition Brewery.

Both are located in downtown Hattiesburg. The presentations were the students' capstone projects for this semester.

"There are about 14 students in the group and we talked earlier in the semester about projects they could participate in for their capstone projects and they selected the breweries," said Betsy Rowell, executive director of the Historic Hattiesburg Downtown Association.

"I learned that there's so many components to craft beer and how you can promote them and how you can get the word out about them, but also how to make the community excited about them, in a way," said Elizabeth Rexford, a senior who worked on a project for Southern Prohibition Brewery.

"It was basically like a legitimate business scenario, where we had to deal with different business owners, communicate with them in a professional setting and so, that's been the biggest take away that I've gotten from this," said Betsy Robinson, a senior who worked on a campaign for Gordon Creek Brewery.

Representatives from the two breweries attended the meeting and said they plan to use the students' ideas.

"Their presentation forced us to really think about marketing," said Sam Sorrells, of Gordon Creek Brewery. "They've opened our eyes and it was a great presentation," he said.

"All of their ideas are fantastic and we want to use all of them," said Emily Curry of Southern Prohibition Brewery.

Restaurants and bars in Hattiesburg will begin selling beer from Southern Prohibition Brewery Thursday night.

Gordon Creek Brewery will have its first product ready for sale in mid-May.

Though she stands at just 4-foot-10, Aimee Durn is a force for the Jones County Junior College women's soccer club. The short freshman from England is a big reason the Lady Bobcats are 5-0-1. "They say big things come in small packages and that's very true for Aimee," said tenth-year JCJC women's soccer coach Dolores Deasley.
