Hattiesburg Schools earn the Gold Award of Distinction

Posted: Updated:

The Hattiesburg School District has earned the Gold Award of Distinction for their school nutrition program.

The award is part of the Healthier U.S. School Challenge certification initiative. All nine schools in the district were recognized Wednesday for their efforts in promoting eating healthy and physical activity.

In 2010 First Lady Michele Obama incorporated the challenge into her "Let's Move" campaign to raise a healthier generation of kids.

To meet the goals of the program the district improved the quality of food served, provided nutrition education to the students, and provided physical education, and opportunities for physical activity.

"Good nutrition adds to a students success and achievements in school and we also know a healthy lifestyle is so very important to be successful," said Stephanie Hoze, Exec. Dir. for Child Nutrition. "We know that physical activity gets their minds working and their energy level builds."

Hattiesburg is one of two districts in the state to earn the Gold Award Distinction. The certification does not expire until Feb. 2007.
