POPLARVILLE, MS (WDAM) -

An organization which has offered comprehensive eye care for thousands of children in South Mississippi is getting a new grant to help additional children in Pearl River and Hancock counties. Sight Savers America has received $30,000 from the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation and the Poplarville Rotary Club.

The money will be used to fund vision-screening and follow-up eye care for all 2nd and 4th graders and other referred students in Hancock and Pearl River counties.

Sight Savers America president and CEO Dr. Jeff Haddox was in Poplarville Wednesday to personally thank Rotarians and members of the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation for their generosity.

"We get a lot of funding from foundations like the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation and the Rotary Club of Poplarville," said Haddox. "They funded this program here and we have lots of other foundations that fund us, but we also have some state funding in Mississippi," Haddox said.

"It's a perfect fit...vision treatment for our children in our service area and the partnership between the Rotary Club of Poplarville and the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation," said Dr. Ted Alexander, CEO of the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation.

"We look for different projects in our community where we can help and be of assistance," said Adam Breerwood, president of the Poplarville Rotary Club. "And when this opportunity presented itself, we were all hands on deck. We were excited and look forward to the outcome," Breerwood said.

Since 2009, more than 10,000 children in Hancock and Pearl River counties have had their vision screened by Sight Savers America.
