Nissan reports record sales of Smyrna-built Leaf

SMYRNA, TN (WSMV) -

It has been a record month for sales of the Nissan Leaf, and workers at the company's high-tech Smyrna battery plant have been busy trying to keep up with that demand.

Nissan is giving tours all this week to show off the battery factory, which is the largest in the country.

The Leaf uses a battery that weighs 600 pounds and packs as much power as 4,500 smartphones.

Much of the plant is still off-limits to cameras because of the secret technology, but the company says it's been quite happy with sales.

"Sales of the Leaf have continued to grow month after month since we've localized the production of the battery plant and the Nissan Leaf here in Smyrna in January," said Mark Swenson, vice president of production engineering for Nissan. "We reached an all-time record in the month of March, so we're very positive about the progress of our sales here in Smyrna."

The Leaf's charging time has also improved since it was first released.

So far, more than 60,000 of the all-electric vehicles are on the road.
