HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Mississippi Dept. of Transportation crews are finishing work on a highway improvement project in Hattiesburg that they hope will save lives. That roadway will also be the only place in the city where you can legally make a U-turn.

Work is almost complete on a $1.1 million median retro-fit on Highway 49, between north 31st Ave. and Campbell Loop at the Lake Terrace Convention Center.

Crews have added a median and a single turn lane at McCaffrey Drive near McDonald's.

For motorists who want to cross the highway, they'll now have to make a U-turn at 31st Ave. or Campbell Loop, which is currently against the law in the city limits.

But, drivers will be allowed to make those turns, because of a state exception for safety improvement projects on state routes.

"In a safety improvement project, we find the best possible solution for motorists to travel," said Kelly Castleberry, MDOT Dist. 6 engineer. "So, we will have signs that are actually being made that we'll put up that will tell motorists that U-turns are allowed there," Castleberry said.

The project began in January and is scheduled to be completed by the first week of June.
