After dramatic SIAC Tournament victory, Lady Rams riding high

It was a feeling of deja vu for the Albany State softball team this weekend at the SIAC Tournament.

The Lady Rams entered the tournament as the East Division's number one seed for the second year in a row.

However, also for the second year in a row, ASU was beaten 8-7 in their opening round game against Fort Valley State.

Same opponent. Same round. Same score.

But a different end result.

This year, the Rams won seven straight games, including two over defending champion Miles, to win the SIAC Title.

"I felt a little more positive about it. I felt a little bit more assured that we could do it," Head Coach Robert Skinner said of coming back. "Last year, I knew we could, but I didn't know if we would. This year, I felt a little bit better about the situation, and just tried to keep the faith. That's all I was doing."

Now the Rams are riding an emotional high heading into the NCAA Regionals.

"We really have this mindset that we can go out and do anything if we just stick to the fundamentals of what we do and what we showed at the conference tournament," says senior Cierra Gaines, who was named Tournament MVP. "I feel like if we go out and hit like we did, I feel like nobody can stop us."
