Owner returns to flooded home to rescue puppies

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Victims of the recent flooding are getting back into their homes Monday after rising waters forced them out late last week.

Over the weekend, many residents evacuated in search of higher ground, and one Mid-Michigander was even forced to leave his puppies behind.

But TV5 has learned one man's flooding nightmare has a silver lining. We first reported on Richard Alvarado's situation on Saturday when he was forced out of his M-13 home due to flooding. Alvarado and his family escaped the rising waters, but their home has heavy water damage.

"I couldn't believe it was up. I couldn't believe it at all," said Alvarado. "It was devastating. I lost everything I own in there you know, my beds, clothes, TVs - everything."

To make matters worse, Alvarado was forced to leave behind several Akita puppies with their older K-9 parents. He left food and water out for them, but it was a tough decision for Alvarado - even though he insists it was the right one.

"I was worried about my dogs, but my family comes first," Alvarado explains. "I put them on the bed and the mother just got up there and was taking care of them. She did what her mother instincts would do and take care of her babies."

Many of you called in the TV5 Continuous News Center wanting to know what happened to the pups. We're glad to report that Alvarado came back to his home to rescue all of his pets on Monday. He says the puppies are in great shape and he plans to put them up for sale soon. He told TV5 he didn't have a place for the dogs to stay on Saturday, but now arrangements have been worked out, which will give Alvarado the chance to focus on his next move to a drier place to live.

"[I'd like to] find a nice place for my kids and my dad," said Alvarado. "And everything is going to go day by day."
