State Fire Marshal investigating Hattiesburg apartment fire

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

State Fire Marshal investigators were in Hattiesburg Monday looking into the cause of a Friday night fire that heavily damaged nine apartments.

More than two-dozen Hattiesburg firefighters responded to the Peppertree Apartments on North 28th Ave. at around midnight and were on scene until 4 a.m.

Authorities say the fire apparently started in the attic of one of the apartments and quickly spread to the other units destroying the roof and causing major damage to  the apartments.

Eight of the nine units were occupied and everyone was able to escape unharmed.

Hattiesburg Fire Investigator Geneva Morgan said there appeared to be nothing suspicious about the fire.

Some of the apartment residents were put up in unoccupied apartments and others were taken care of by the Red Cross.
