Police shoot, kill man after he points gun at officers

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A man wanted in connection with a shooting earlier this week was shot dead by police after he aimed a gun at officers overnight.

Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Steve Martos said early Saturday morning officers were called to 80th Avenue near Indian School Road for a reported suspicious man with a flashlight in the area.

Martos said while officers had just arrived in the area when a taxi cab drove towards them on the side street where they parked.

Martos said the officers recognized a man in the back seat of the taxi as a person wanted for shooting his girlfriend two days ago.  The driver and a woman passenger in the backseat were also in the taxi.

The officers quickly cleared the driver and woman passenger from the taxi as they confronted the man in the backseat, said Martos.

Martos said as the man made his way out of the taxi he pointed a handgun at officers.  The officers shot him and he died at the scene, said Martos.  No officers were hurt during the incident.

No names of those involved have been released at this time.
