Mule drawn wagon train rolls through Big Creek Park in Soso

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Several wagon train enthusiasts made their way through Pat Harrison Big Creek 10 Park Thursday.

The caravan of mule drawn wagons has traveled around 100 miles since Saturday in a scenic loop around south central Mississippi. The pack stopped for lunch at Big Creek Park to enjoy the amenities and ride the trails they say are well adapted and wide enough to handle their wagons.

Lionel Ladner says working the mules and wagon is a 30-year passion. "I just love everything about it, everything. I love to work them mules and ride them wagons. I love the people we ride with. This park is as clean as you want to see. I go to a lot of parks and I've been a lot of places and ride. This park is clean, they keep it nice."

Big Creek Park 10 officials say the Trailmix Horse Trails were built in 2009, and each host unique names from various musical artists and songs. Riders say the horse trails are always wide and well maintained.

Though she stands at just 4-foot-10, Aimee Durn is a force for the Jones County Junior College women's soccer club. The short freshman from England is a big reason the Lady Bobcats are 5-0-1. "They say big things come in small packages and that's very true for Aimee," said tenth-year JCJC women's soccer coach Dolores Deasley.

After a week without a football game, the University of Southern Mississippi may be getting some of their walking wounded back as the Golden Eagles prepare to open Conference USA play Saturday with a visit from the University of North Texas. But USM will be down an assistant football coach. USM coach Jay Hopson confirmed Monday that running backs coach Lytrel Pollard was “not with us right now.”
